Re: How to get a referral for diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder - all advice welcome

Hello, I'm sorry you're struggling. I don't have DID, but I have struggled to be taken seriously. I've found that research psychologists/psychiatrists myself before going to the GP and having the GP refer me to the one I chose is the only way to get where you need to go. GPs are wonderful but they don't know you well enough to know what you're looking for in a psychologist. There are also websites that review psychologists and psychiatrists so can read other people's experience with them and make up your mind from that.

I hope you find a good one who takes you seriously. Good Luck!

If you can afford private fees with no rebate, you can self refer to a Clinical Psychologist for assessment

If you google something like "Clinical Psychologist assessment dissociative disorders" you should find a specialist in that field

They'll send your GP a report and from there GP can refer you to psychiatrist etc

Hi @Daphne1 , sorry to be patronising but I guess doctors and psychologists feel they are the ones giving the diagnoses, not the patient! In this day and age many more people feel confident about mental illnesses and you probably know yourself quite well. If you are not happy with a diagnosis I'm sure there are avenues to get the help you want.
